The woods. He was deep in the woods. There didn’t seem to
be any way of getting out, no way of escaping The Thing that
was behind him, chasing him.

His feet slipped on the wet leaves as he ran for safety. It was dark, too dark to take any chances. Each step could be his last; the ground underneath his feet was treacherous.

Concentrate. The rain was now torrential, making the leaves crackle as it poured down. There were small puddles of water forming all along the path. He was breathing heavily as he ran, bent over, his right arm held out in front of his face, protecting it from the hanging branches of the trees that lined both sides of the path.

He risked a look behind him; it looked clear. The Thing that was chasing him was gone. Maybe he was seeing things. But he had to be sure, had to know for certain, and there was only one way to find out. He stopped, turned around, and looked more closely. He breathed a huge sigh of relief. It was gone. Panic over. He bent over and took a deep breath before rubbing his hands over his face to clear the water from it.

A crack of thunder exploded overhead. He looked skywards and gasped as his heart rate increased. Then, inevitably, came a bolt of lightning that lit up the sky, causing him to jump and raise his hands to his face. He splayed his fingers and peeked through. The panic set in again, The Thing was back. It was up ahead, motionless, silhouetted against the brightness as another lightning bolt crackled overhead. The ominous figure was dressed from head to toe in black, and in its right hand, slung over its shoulder, it held something that looked like a long piece of wood. A baseball bat?
